I need some help. I now have to shop in the big men’s department at the clothing store. Society is not designed for larger people. My grocery bill is completely out of control. This has all been created because I weigh to much, but I have to change the way I look now. I’m just not sure how I can accomplish this daunting feat.

While sitting on the sofa one night, I saw a reality show about overweight people. I went online and found out that the show had a website that included a link to the biggest loser forum where there were all sorts of helpful hints, tools and chat rooms that are dedicated to helping people lose weight. It was great to be able to find out that there was support out there for me in my quest. Having the support of others would make it easier to lose the weight by myself. So I completed my first step by doing the research.

The next step was to come up with some actual numbers that I wanted to achieve in my weight loss journey. I couldn’t wait any longer to lose a lot of weight. I knew that I had to learn how to lose weight fastbecause my health was in danger and if I did not act quickly, I might not get another chance to succeed, and like the people on the show I had watched, I decided that I could lose more than ten pounds a week if I worked hard enough. For the next few months I devoted my life to exercise, diet, and work. There was no time for anything else. All of the effort started to pay off. My waistline was shrinking. After four weeks I had lost a bunch of weight. For a short time, my weight loss stopped, and I was stick at the same weight for a couple of weeks. My physician let me know that this happens from time to time and it is nothing that I should be concerned about. I took the advice and kept working out. Eventually the pounds started to disappear again. My self image was back up again because I didn’t give up.

I have made a major impact on my life by making the decision to lose weight and have been very successful going from over four hundred pound to about two hundred and thirty pounds in under a year. It wasn’t always easy, but it was all worth it. My doctor told me that I am now healthier than I have been in over twenty years. Friends and family are awestruck at the amount of weight I have lost. I wake up in the morning with a smile on my face and a skip in my step because of how I feel. I don’t want to return to the way I was, but just dropping the pounds is not the thing I am most proud of. The best part has been the great feeling I have about myself. I could not get that for any amount of money.

As we age, our goes through a transformation. We pass through many different stages in life. There are things that we cause to happen and things that just happen. If we are short, there is not much we can do to change it permanently. The size of your head is the size of your head and short of some type of radical surgery, it is beyond your control. We do decide what we eat everyday and if we follow an exercise program or not. It is up to us to decide the amount of food we take in and what we do to stay active. Because we decide this, then we also control it.

There is massive amount of information about the detrimental effects that being overweight can have on a person’s body. If a person is overweight they put themselves at risk for many ailments that include high blood pressure, diabetes, and muscle and joint pain. However, because a person has some of the issues related to obesity, that person can change things if they want to. If a person decides to take control of their body then they can make some or all of these symptoms disappear. If this is what is desired than the choice must be made to take control of the situation and not let the situation be in control.

The reason a person usually uses to start a diet and exercise program is unique for each individual. No one has the same reason that they are overweight and why they want to lose the weight is also different. One person might decide to get healthy for their family. Another person might want to do it because they think they will look better. Stop Emotional Eating and Lose Weight

Stop emotional eating by understanding the difference between eating out of habit and eating emotional stress.
Yes, at any given time you can be eating from habit or eating from emotion. How can you tell the difference? And what is habitual eating?

Habitual eating is the habit of being at a certain place or time and eating. For instance, stopping at the fast food joint every morning for coffee and a croissant. Or coming home every afternoon, walking in the front door, through the living room, into the kitchen, and opening the refrigerator.

The best technique to handle eating out of habit is awareness techniques. And quite frankly, for most of history, overeating has been approached strictly from the habitual. The techniques to handle eating out of habit are awareness techniques which could be any of the following:

  • Equivalents
  • Diets
  • Take a deep breadth before eating
  • Putting forks down between bites
  • Counting Calories

Quite frankly, if we were only habitual eaters, this is all that we’d need. However, none of the awareness techniques address eating emotional stress which is the reason why everyone who uses them experiences some weight loss and eventually gains it all back.

Only within the last two decades have we become aware of the connection between eating and emotional stress which necessitates a totally different approach. Back to the main question, how do you tell whether you are a habitual or an emotional eater at any given time? The answer is not totally clear by one’s behavior. Thus the most effective means of handling excessive eating is to go through a quick process of elimination.

Initially we assume that the excessive eating is habitual and treat is as such. An awareness technique I suggest using is a shift in thinking (cognition) requiring no more than a few seconds. If it is indeed habitual, with the shift in thinking, the food is left there and food is forgotten. If on the other hand the shift in thinking results in temptation to follow through and eat, then it is clearly eating emotional. Overcoming emotional eating is to learn to embrace the context of the emotion and stop diluting it with food. It’s to first of all acknowledge the specific emotion–no need to justify it or judge it–just notice the emotion and introduce the option of choice. And that is to take the emotion straight or to dilute it with food.

Next is the critical step. Being new to the concept of embracing emotion, it’s normal for the individual to continue diluting the emotion with food. The goal is to move to a loving of self from which there is total acceptance (a building of self worth) at which point, the individual is able to say, “I have stopped diluting the feeling of (whatever). I may be uncertain as to how to handle the situation, one thing I know is that I have stopped diluting my feelings.” And this is done one day at a time.

In fact, those who acquaint themselves with the relationship between food and emotions can never cheat again–it’s simply no longer in the vocabulary.

A progressive approach to lose weight involves asking important questions “What is missing here? Why are you not getting the results you’ve been promised?” It is clearly insane to keep dieting and using techniques to deal with the habit of eating when the results are so poor. It’s more important to gain a grasp on how to stop emotional eating–eating emotional stress than it is to read the scale. Besides focusing on the scale doesn’t empower you to be a better more enlightened person, whereas learning how to overcome emotional eating empowers you in all aspects of your life. If you’re a sales person, you’ll be a better sales person. If you’re an assembly line worker, you’ll be a better assembly line worker. Overall, you’ll build self worth and find that what you really want to eat is far more nutritious and less in quantity than you ever before imagined possible.
