You know that you will look and feel better if you could just maintain a healthy weight, but it is so hard to feel consistently motivated to lose weight and actually keep it off indefinitely. We all know that fad diets don’t work, but often we aren’t so good at sticking to effective weight loss plans that we know will ultimately work – IF we stick to it.

Making use of the following tips will give you the tools you need to understand how to keep motivated to lose weight from now on.

Build A Case For Losing Weight: Collect Evidence

One way to build up your motivation to make life changing decisions and take control of your weight is to collect evidence against yourself. You want to prove the case that you urgently need to lose some weight, and you can accomplish that through photographs.

Take a few photographs of yourself as you are today, and then find pictures of yourself from years past. Get together as many photographs as possible that feature you at different ages and different weights. You can then line them up on a table in order of time or stick them down to a paper or poster board.

It is rather hard to deny how overweight you are when you are staring at yourself from an outside perspective. Do you represent the person that inside you know you truly are? Do you really want to return to the days of being healthy and thin?

It’s Not Just About The Scale

When you’re trying to drop weight it is easy to forget the bigger picture and only pay attention to the scale. A more balanced approach to get the scale moving by setting fitness goals that have nothing to do with weight. For instance, sign up for an upcoming 5K event and decide to walk it. Additional targets could be to work up to doing a certain number of chin ups, sit ups, or push ups. You might even plan to build up to doing one handed push ups, for example.

You can train to run if the event is far enough away and you can realistically get into good enough shape to be able to handle it. What you should definitely NOT do however is set yourself up for disappointment with unrealistic targets, so make sure it is achievable. Doing so will ensure you maintain your motivation to lose weight in an effective manner.

Awaken your Competitive Spirit

Bring your friends on board and arrange a friendly competition. Everyone can chip in to get a nice reward that will be given to the winner.

If you can’t get others in real life to do this there are many online weight loss forums that have many competitions happening on a regular basis.

Buy That Smaller Dress And Use It As An Incentive

Perhaps you know of a certain peice of clothing that you would really love to wear? Perhaps it’s a smaller summer dress with light sandals or a pair of short shorts without cellulite and fat jiggling out underneath. Whatever it is, purchase it in the size you would ultimately like to be hang it up in a place where you will see it daily.

You should put it on occasionally for a visual reminder of how much progress you are making!

Realize that most of these tips for getting motivated to lose weight require forward thinking. You take action now because you want something better for yourself in the future, as opposed to focusing on the sacrafices you are making now in order to get there.
